Senate orders Obaseki to issue Fresh Proclamation

KUNLE ADESUI, Abuja

Senate on Tuesday ordered Governor Godwin Obaseki, governor of Edo, a week ultimatum to issue a fresh proclamation for the inauguration of the state house of assembly or else the National Assembly will take over the Assembly.

Senate decision was sequel to the report of Senate adhoc Committee on Edo Assembly crisis chaired by Senator Abdullahi Sabi.

Presenting the report for consideration, the Chairman of adhoc Committee said that section 11 (4) of the constitution empowers it to take over Edo Assembly.

The Senate Panel in its report said that the Governor did not follow due process in the issuance of Proclamation for Edo Assembly.

It could be recalled that House of Representatives threatened to take over Edo Assembly and also asked Mohammed Adamu, inspector-general of police, to seal off the Edo assembly over the crisis.

The crisis in Edo when lawmakers loyal to Obaseki were secretly inagurated on June 17, leaving their colleagues stranded.
