The state Commissioner of Police, Undie Adie while addressing stakeholders at the Police Officers Mess, in Akure, the state capital, said the recruitment of special constables is a step forward to enhancing community policing .
The police boss said it would complement efforts of the existing police structure and efforts of all security agencies, adding that there will be training programmes for the constables to enable them to perform adequately.
He said, ”once the screening is done by the community, the Oba’s should have confidence in the community members.
“The government will continue to provide logistics for the programme as it unfolds. We should take note that each constable in their local government must not move to another to operate as they are only to operate from their designated area of assignment.
Speaking on modalities for the recruitment, he pointed out that the state command has set up a screening committee for the recruitment process with the involvement of Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACPs), Divisional Police Officers (DPO), traditional rulers, religious leaders among other stakeholders that will screen volunteers.
He said they must be of good character and will eventually be recruited as special constables.
In his reaction, Deji of Akure, Oba Aladelusi Aladetoyinbo, represented by the Asamo, High Chief Rotimi Faseun, said the move is ‘a welcome development.’
Other traditional rulers and community leaders at the event called on the Federal Government to reward the constables.
