Senate leader and candidate for the office of Senate President in the coming 9th Assembly, Dr. Ahmed Lawan has declared he won’t be a rubber stamp senate president if elected by his collegues to head the next assembly.
Senator Lawal who said his quest for the leadership of the upper chamber of the National Assembly is not ‘a do or die’ however said under his presidency, the senate will have no qualms in differing with President Muhammadu Buhari led executive if need be.
Speaking with a select editors in Abuja on Wednesday, the senate leader who was accompanied by over 10 other senators said that his presidency will ensure that budget processes are concluded and passed by the National Assembly in December, each year and sent to the president for assent.
According to him, “we will work out a system and in agreement with the executive where three months will be dedicated to budget defence and within that period, no lawmaker will be permitted to travel abroad unless on health ground and there will be no other legislative business aside that of budget. We will ensure that all head of ministeries and parastatals are also not permitted to travel until budget defence is concluded. I believe that budgets can be ready by december and sent to the president for assent.
“Our vision is to have a senate that works for Nigerians. We are aware that Nigerians want a government that wll develope all areas of their lives, that will improve in the security of lives and property and ensure that the economy works again.
“We will defer with the executive when there is need to and as well collaborate with them for the interest of the nation.
“No, my interest to be the senate president is not ‘a do or die’ matter, dont forget that i contested in 2015 but it was not the will of God, but i think it is my time now.
“I have consulted with all members of the incoming senate and i want to say that i am not been sponsored by the party or anyone.”
Earlier, the chairman of the campaign committee, Senator Yaya Abdulahi said “We are the first to flag off the campaign before others joined. The party did not impose him, we all know the role he played when 16 of our members defected, by his efforts, unity was restored as well as credibility to the party.
“We are attracted by the nature and character of his person. He is knowledgeable, very clean in Nigeria standard, we will not need to be going to court. He relates well and he has the capacity to led the senate.”
