SUNDAY ODE, Abuja

Imo Governor, Hope Uzodinma Thursday met with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja to seek approval for the refund of about N32 billion the state had allegedly expended on federal projects.

Imo is in “financial distress” the governor declared while sparking to State House correspondents after the meeting with Buhari.

He said the funds, if released, will assist in clearing both salary and pension arrears.

According to him also, the consultants he engaged discovered that at least N32 billion was spent on federal roads in the past.

Uzodinma said he briefed Buhari on the situation of things he met on the ground in the state generally when he took over as governor.

He said: “I came to discuss with President on some critical areas. Imo State you know is not solvent. Imo State is financially distressed, the roads are so bad, security situation is rough, education is backward and a lot of things to do and we don’t have the money.
“So I have come to request the kind intervention of Mr. President to at least refund some monies spent on some of the Federal roads in Imo State before my arrival so that we can address some pressing issues like pension arrears, salary areas so that we can get back the people, recover the people first before we begin to talk of infrastructure.
“The Consultants are still working but so far we have computed the monies in the neighborhood of N32 billion and my first application to Mr. President, I articulated those ones that will have prior approval before construction and a total sum of N12 billion has been recorded and I have submitted the request and in his magnanimity, he has assured me that he will look into it very considerably.”

Uzodinma’s predecessors are Achike Udenwa (1999 to 2007), Ikedi Ohakim (2007 to 2011), Rochas Okorocha (2011 to 2019) and Emeka Ihedioha who governed for only seven months before the supreme court sacked him.
