A lorry tanker fully loaded with kerosene coming from Port Harcourt, Rivers State to Imo State fell down on Tuesday at Hospital junction Owerri as it was entering to distribute the product.
According to eye witness, the lorry was negotiating to divert to easier way to get to its destination but could not find it so easy due to wrong calculation as it wanted to escape long traffic jam before it felt down suddenly.
The kerosene worth millions of naira poured out and hawkers and other roadside business settlers rushed with their containers to scoop the product, while others were running away for safety due I the product is highly inflammable.
The incident occurred at exactly 12pm when people were returning from church service but no live was lost.
The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, of the state Command confirmed the situation and said the command police patrol team has been sent to the venue to handle the situation.
He confirmed further that some residents who forced themselves into the venue to scoop the kerosene were chased away by his men at the scene.
Disclosing that the driver and his conductors have been brought to the command for further interrogations, the PPRO warned business hawkers to stay off the scene to avoid meeting unusual occurrence.
The tanker is still lying down on the Owerri-PortHarcourt express road pending when police would have finished their findings before getting it evacuated.
