Former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Prof. Joy Ogwu, have been selected as the special guests of honour and the keynote speakers at the upcoming International Conference on African Development Issues organised by Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State.

 

The conference, which will hold in May, 2016 at the African Leadership Development Centre on the premises of Covenant University, is the third edition by the institution.

Themed “Driving inclusive and sustainable development in Africa: Models, methods and policies,” the 2016 edition of the conference will proffer solutions to the diverse issues relating to Africa’s development.

A statement said aside from Obasanjo and Ogwu, the event would also feature other speakers, panelists and discussants drawn from the various walks of life within Nigeria and abroad, including the Associate Vice-President, Research, McMaster University, Canada, Prof. Bonny Ibhawoh; the Managing Director of Skye Bank, Mr. Timothy Oguntayo; and the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Communication Technology, Dr. Tunji Olaopa.

Others are: the President, Africa’s Young Entrepreneurs, South Africa, Dr. Nduka Okoisor; the Chairman, Senate Committee on ICT and Cyber Security, Senator Foster Ogola; and the Chairman, Ogun State Board of Technical and Vocational Education, Mrs. Doyin Ogunbiyi, among others.

The statement added that the Chancellor of Covenant University, Dr. David Oyedepo, expressed delight at the sustenance of the ICADI conference, which had in previous editions featured three Nobel Laureates as keynote speakers.

The statement quoted Oyedepo as saying, “I have no doubt in my mind that this carefully selected team of erudite scholars and technocrats will do justice to the central theme of CU-ICADI 2016.

“I do also expect that the inclusive and sustainable approach to this year’s conference, as well as its expanded approach, will make the outcome of the conference much more beneficial to the development of the African continent.”

Highlighting the significance of ICADI, the Vice-Chancellor of Covenant University, Prof. Charles Ayo, said it was one of the strategic platforms targeted towards the actualisation of Vision 10:2022 of the institution, which is to get the university listed among the top 10 universities in the world by 2022.

The of Head of the UN West Africa Office, Mohammed Ibn Chambas, has said Boko Haram insurgents were unable to disrupt the electoral process in Nigeria, following the regional forces’ involvement in Nigeria.
Briefing the UN Security Council via videoconference on Monday in New York, he said the group’s control had been reduced to only a few areas.
