SPDC JV’s Afam VI power plant secures licence for another 10 years

The Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission has renewed the power generation licence for Afam VI Power Plant, a 650MW-capacity facility that has delivered over 25.97 million megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity into the Nigerian grid since inception in 2008.
Afam VI is owned by The Shell Petroleum Development Company Joint Venture (SPDC JV) and located in Afam in Oyigbo Local Government area of Rivers State.


The Management of Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) yesterday said the oil giant requires peace and security from its cluster communities for its partnerships with host communities to flourish.
The company said clusters partnerships will help generate employment opportunities, improve the local economy and generally empower various segment of the local populace.
General Manager, Sustainable Development and Community Relations, SPDC, Nedo Osayande, disclosed this in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital, during the commissioning of 12 completed projects executed by Iduwini Development Foundation in partnership with SPDC.
Osayande said SPDC Joint Venture has provided a total of N1.526 billion since the Iduwini Cluster Development Board was inaugurated six years ago , noting that the company will stand by clusters to deliver real and valued drive benefits to its people.
He noted that the company is pleased that money meant for the clusters were judiciously utilized for the benefits of the six communities in the clusters.
Osayande said the commissioned projects are income generating, while others are empowerment and skills development centres for rural women.
“This complex is expected to generate income for cluster and will help it to undertake more projects for the benefit of communities,” he said.
Osayande said  the project  were implemented under the Global Memorandum f Understanding (GMUO) platform  and will serve the purpose for which it was undertaken and would be mutually beneficial to the operators and the communities.
Earlier, Chairman, Iduwini Development Foundation (IDF), Mr. Tiko Tiko, said the clusters would ensure that SPDC projects are executed without hitches in the kingdom and lauded the management of SPDC for its support in the implementation of GMOU for the six cluster communities.
“The Foundation will ensure the smooth running of SPDC operations in Iduwini Kingdom in as much as the collaboration with the foundation is paramount,” Tiko said.
Tiko outlined inadequate training of board members and non-implementation of community interfaced article of GMOU as its major challenges.
He noted that among the commissioned projects include a modern Secretariat build in Yenagoa and eleven others located in its rural communities to impact skills to the youths.
The chairman said the completion of the modern Secretariat cost the foundation over N117m, equipped with modern generating sets and computers facilities.
