New minimum wage: Buhari appoints 30 man-committee for negotiation

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday approved the appointment of a 30-member tripartite National Minimum Wage Committee for the negotiation of a new National Minimum Wage. The Committee will be inaugurated on Monday 27th November, 2017 at the Council Chambers, Aso Rock Presidential Villa, Sate House, Abuja.

The 2016 May Day celebration has come and gone. But its fond memories will linger for a long time in the minds of Nigerian workers and other stakeholders. On May 1, workers joined their counterparts all over the world to mark day, which is  set aside  to celebrate workers, articulate their predominant concerns and aspirations, demand for change and better working conditions and standard of living, among others.

Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole on Thursday accused former President Goodluck Jonathan of discrimination against governors in then opposition party, All Progressives Congress, APC with respect to the allocation of some Federal Government resources to states.
A case in point, according to the governor, who has been very critical of the immediate past federal administration, was the allocation of about N2billion each to states governed by the then ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP), while the APC states were brazenly left out.
Accordingly, he said Nigeria was lucky to have President Muhammadu Buhari on the saddle at moment, saying that Buhari recognized that he was not just President of the Federal Government alone but that of the entire federation.
Oshiomhole was fielding questions from State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa, Abuja after a meeting of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) with the President.
According to him, it would have been pretty difficult for the states to ask for bailout or any other kind of financial relief from the Jonathan administration, because they would simply not get it.
His word: “We are very lucky to have President Buhari at this time. I have been here now for seven and a half years and I have had the opportunity to work with three Presidents; that is the truth.
“Under the last President, it would have been impossible for us to approach Abuja to give us support because we have personal challenges, instead, we would have been given lectures on fiscal responsibility and all those kind of talks, even though the wastage was more here than any other place at that time.
“We have a President who recognises that he is not just president of the federal government, he is the president of the federation of which the states are part and regardless of our political affiliation, this is very important, everybody is able to ask this president to give him support and he is giving.
“Whereas in the recent past some PDP governors got N2 billion from ecological fund, we APC governors were not given. But we promised to be different and I am happy this president is showing that difference.”
On the N56,000 minimum wage being demanded for workers by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Oshiomhole said though he was yet to see the proposal, he was an avid believer in a “living wage”
“I have not seen the document proposing a new minimum wage, but believing in your judgment that it is a proposal. From my own experience there is always a difference between a proposal and a final agreement: man proposes God disposes.
“In the real world, nobody gets what he wants, you get what you negotiate any day, any time; wake me up I believe in a living wage,” he submitted.
