DISCOs inability to transmit 6500mw threatens FG 2020 targets

WITH the increased demand for electricity fueled by population growth and rising urbanisation in the country, stakeholders in the power sector have said that the Distribution Companies, DISCOs, lack the capacity to wheel 6500 megawatts (mw) of electricity transmitted to them.

The Electricity Meter Manufacturing Association of Nigeria, EMMAN, has warned that it would no longer condone acts capable of undermining its position in the industry. Muhideen Ibrahim, its secretary, said the allegation levelled against the company by some distribution companies, DISCOs, that it produces inferior meters compared to the ones imported from China and other countries, was not true.

Labour, under the aegis of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), has taken a swipe at the operators in the electricity generation and distribution companies in the country for buck-passing against the backdrop of their apparent inability to provide stable power supply to Nigerians, despite huge tariffs.

CONSUMER Protection Council (CPC) has charged the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola   to hold his operators’  accountable to their contracts with consumers.
The Director General of the Council, Mrs. Dupe Atoki, made the assertion on recently in Abuja when she paid a courtesy call on the minister in his office.
