Seychelles out to dose Flames in Umlazi

Malawi and Seychelles will be eager to get their 2019 Cosafa Cup campaign off to a winning start when they do battle in a group B clash at King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi on Sunday afternoon.

Kick-off is at 16h30 CAT.

The two nations both suffered group stage elimination from the Southern African showpiece 12 months ago, having both conjured a mere two points from their allotted fixtures in Polokwane.

Malawi head coach Make Mwase has assembled a strong squad as the Flames aim to blaze their way into the quarterfinals where a showdown against Zambia awaits.

South African-based Gabadinho Mhango and Gerald Phiri Jnr headline Malawi’s squad for the tournament, and Mwase will be counting on the duo as they aim to improve on recent Cosafa outings.

“[It is] tricky in the sense that at times, we have struggled against teams like Mozambique and Namibia,” Mwase said. “So, on paper it might look fair, but realistically it could be tough as well.”

Seychelles will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of fellow Island nation Madagascar in reaching the final four, having never done so at the Southern African tournament.

Malawi finished as runners-up at both the 2002 and 2003 tournaments, losing to South Africa and Zimbabwe respectively in the final.

Mozambique and Namibia complete a competitive group B.
