Shehu Sani, the Senator representing Kaduna Central has condemned the raid of Daily Trust regional office in Maiduguri, Borno State by armed soldiers on Sunday.

We had reported that the soldiers shut the gate of its Maiduguri regional office, after arresting the two editorial staff on sight at the time of the raid.

As of the time of filing this report, it was still unclear why they took the action, but it may be connected with the lead story of the newspaper on military operation in the North East.

But reacting, Sani while commending the soldiers for their service to Nigeria, described the siege as an act of ‘dictatorship’.

The Kaduna lawmaker on his Twitter page wrote: “We appreciate the service and sacrifice of our troops on the frontline. However, the siege on the Daily Trust and the arrest of Journalists is an affront on freedom, reminiscent of the era of dictatorship.

“Complains against the media should be presented to their Unions or Press Council.”

Meanwhile, the federal government has directed the military to vacate the premises of Daily Trust and the order has been complied with.
