The city of Onitsha over the weekend was reawakened to the jaws of the past as a gang of armed robbers on rampage killed five persons in two separate operatipns along Enugu/Onitsha expressway, leaving scores injured.
The operation which took place in the wee hours of Saturday happened barely twenty four hours after the state Governor, Willie Obiano donated vehicles and CCTV to the state police Command in an elaborate ceremony in Awka.
Information gathered by Champion has it that the night marauders drove into the Seaman petrol station with their vehicle at about 2.00am on Saturday, and were granted access to the petrol station with the belief that they were customers
The robbers numbering about six on arrival shot and killed one of the vigilante operatives on sight and a staff member who was woken up by the sound of barrage of gunshots and made to run.
They also shot to death a female sale’s attendant, who delayed when the masked pointer asked her for the key to the volt.
Other casualties include two girls and three men at Seaman Petrol Station within Borrower round-about axis and a popular pharmacy shop along Awka road, in the commercial city of Onitsha.
It was learnt that all monies realised from sales for the day were carted away as the pointer showed where they were kept even as scores of night travelers, who were plying the area stopped their vehicles and scampered for safety.
When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, SP Haruna Mohammed, said, police is investigating the matter and will come out with its findings later.
