EMMANUEL AWARI, Jalingo

The Taraba State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, has raised the alarm over plans by some politicians to cause mayhem in order to disrupt the governorship and House of Representatives elections billed for Saturday, March 9 in the state.

The state Chairman of the association, Rev Innocent Solomon, who said this on Monday at a press briefing in Jalingo, the state capital, revealed that  the association was in possession of a document which detailed how the plans were to be executed, adding that some people planned to cause mayhem in some designated places in Jalingo.

The plan, Solomon added, was to cause a postponement of the elections so that a new date could be fixed to give undue advantage to one of the political parties.

He said: “The plan is in two phases; Phase 1 is to be executed in three mapped areas in the state capital on 7th March 2019 at 3: 00pm, and the areas to be affected area Nukkai, PDP Secretariat, Road Block among others. Ten Youths armed with dangerous weapons and 20 litres of petrol will be stationed at strategic areas to carry out the Mayhem so that the state would be thrown into bloody crises that will lead to the postponement of the Governorship and State Assembly Elections”.

According to him, Plan 2 would be executed at INEC office on Monday 11th March 2019 at 5:00 pm.

“Plan 2 by the hoodlums would be carried out at INEC office when collation of results is on going. This Plan is to manipulate all results in favour of a particular Political Party and that if failure by INEC officials to comply or cooperate, then they will destroy the Office”, he said.

He disclosed that the evil plan would enjoy the cover of the newly  Commissioner of Police in the state, adding that the police boss will instruct officers and men of the command to remain adamant in the face of the ugly event.

The CAN Chairman called on all political actors to allow the  people of the state to freely choose their leaders without intimidation, adding that the state belongs to all and must do everything to protect it for generations yet unborn.

On the Presidential Election victory celebration in Jalingo, the CAN Chairman condemned the violent celebration witnessed in the state capital after the announcement of the Presidential results by some party supporters.

“Those supporters, armed with dangerous weapons, trooped to the major streets of Jalingo, assaulting motorists, commuters and traders, looting and destroying people’s properties. Unfortunately, while the mayhem was talking place, the Police and soldiers saddled with the responsibilities of maintaining law and order stood aloof.

“CAN calls on security agencies to carefully interrogate the plan towards disrupting the Peace of the state in the forthcy Governorship and State House of Assembly Elections in the state.

” I want to also call on the outside world to be aware of the evil plan to be carried out by some unscrupulous elements to scuttle the peace of our state, Taraba State remains one of the most peaceful states in the North- East sub-region under the able leadership of His Excellency, Governor Darius Dickson Ishaku”.

“We reject imported confusion and crises by desperate politicians who do not wish our state well”, he added.

He further called on all law-abiding citizens to remain calm, peaceful and urged them to remain vigilant and report  any suspicious elements to the law enforcement agencies and also come out en masse to exercise their franchise in the forthcoming Governorship and State Assembly Elections scheduled for March 9, 2019.
