FAVOUR SHUAIB, Abuja
The Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole, has come under attack for refusing to obey the recommendations of the Ministerial Fact-Finding Committee on the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri that was constituted by the Ministry of Labour and Employment, on the crisis rocking the medical centre.
The condemnation came from a pressure group, Association for Public Policy Analysis which held that the step taken by Health Minister was illegal and unpopular.
It will be recall that Adewole had constituted an Interim Management Committee to pilot the affairs of the medical center against the recommendations of the ministerial committee by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment.
In a press statement by the association which was signed by its chairman, Comrade Princewill Okorie, the association noted that the action of the minister was a direct slap on President Muhammadu Buhari’s anti-corruption war.
According to the statement, “In line with Association for Public Policy Analysis for good governance and effective implementation of health policies with consideration to sections 14 (2) (b) of the 1999 constitution which states that security and welfare of the people is the primary purpose of government; and section 14 (2) (C) which provides that the participation of the people in their government ensured; we consider the weakness being exhibited by the Minister of Health as unfortunate.
“Adewole in implementing the recommendations of the Ministerial Fact finding Committee on Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, a serious challenge on the part of the Federal Executive Council as presently constituted in upholding the pronouncement of the President in his inaugural address to the nation on 29th May, 2015, where he said, “We shall rebuild and reform the public service to become more effective and more serviceable. We shall charge them to apply themselves to integrity to stabilize the system”.
The group also expressed dismay on the way the Minister handled the matter by quickly jumping to constitute the interim management committee to lead the organization instead of applying strict measures to make the workers obey the rules of civil service engagement and respect the authority of government given the findings of the Ministerial Fact finding Committee.
They however, called for the immediate removal of the interim committee and reinstate the authentic management to complete its tenure.
