Organisers of Onitsha City Marathon (OCM) has announced Coca-Cola Nigeria, as its first official sponsor for the maiden marathon billed to take place in the commercial city of Onitsha on October 5, 2019.
A statement released on Wednesday by Head, Media and Publicity of OCM, Philip Balepo said that the sponsorship deal was sealed during a meeting with the Regional Trade Marketing Coordinator, Monday Afesumen, in Onitsha.
According to Balepo, Afesumen had commended the coming of the marathon to Onitsha, saying, “since this is the maiden international edition, East of the Niger, Coca-Cola is happy to associate with the event, as an international company.”
The half marathon race is expected to cover twenty one kilometres and will serve as one of the build-up events to this year’s annual Ofala Festival.
Balepo said that OCM has also picked up media partnership with two major radio stations in Onitsha, namely, City Radio 89.7 FM and WAZOBIA 93.7 FM.
He further revealed that the race is backed by Athletic Federation of Nigeria (AFN), the IAAF and the Association of International Marathoners (AIMS) adding that the marathon has also been endorsed by the Traditional Ruler of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha.
“OCM has continued to record massive entries from home and abroad. Only recently, a top Kenyan Marathoner, Benard Bosuben, an elite athlete, has been confirmed for the race. His current best time is 1:03:45”, he added.
Giving a breakdown of how the race will go, Balepo explained that the race will start off at Onitsha Shoprite Mall, pass through DMGS/Zik’s Round about through Oguta Road, to New Cemetery.
From the MCC Road, the runners will go through the Express to Bridge Head with a U-turn to Zik’s Mausoleum to New Spare Parts Market and another U-turn to terminate at the late Chuba Ikpeazu Stadium, Onitsha.
