United States’ President, Donald Trump, has congratulated President Muhammadu Buhari on the nation’s 59th independence anniversary, saying Nigeria was among America’s strongest partners in Africa.

Trump, in a statement in Washington on Monday, added that the two countries share common goals of expanding trade and growing their economic relationship.

He said, “We are allies in the global battle against terrorism, and we want to see Boko Haram and ISIS-West Africa driven out of the region and other insurgencies like them dismantled.

The United States welcomes efforts by your administration to diversify opportunities for your talented, creative, and hardworking people to the benefit of both our countries, Africa, and the world.”

The American President said he was pleased that the Vice Presidents of the two nations were building on the longstanding history of cooperation between US and Nigeria.

“On behalf of the American people, I extend our warmest greetings and congratulate you on the 59th anniversary of Nigeria’s independence.

“I wish the people of Nigeria continued success as you mark another year of independence,” the statement added.
The greeting from Trump is coming after 13 months the US President reportedly told his aides he never wanted to meet someone as “lifeless” as Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari again.

Trump’s remarks came after Buhari’s visit to the White House earlier this year, said a BBC report quoting Financial Times.

“Trump likes chemistry. Africa has never been high on his radar but if the big guy likes you he’ll find a way to make things work,” an unnamed source reportedly told the Financial Times ahead of a meeting between Trump and Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta on Monday.

Buhari was the first sub-Saharan African president to visit Trump at the White House where Trump also reportedly managed to stir a few controversies during the meeting, according to BBC.
