Navy vows to end crude oil theft

worried by the loss of billions of naira every day through oil theft, the newly appointed Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral I.E. Ibas, has vowed to use all the available resources at his disposal to tackle crude oil thieves and other criminals in the maritime sector of the country.
He stated this while taking over the mantle of leadership in Abuja.
Ibas also promised Navy personnel responsive and motivational leadership that would institute an appropriate reward system.
His vision for the Navy, he said, was “To develop a credible naval power in fulfillment of the Nigerian Navy’s constitutional roles towards enhancing national prosperity and security.”
Meanwhile, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Major-General Abayomi Gabriel Olonisakin, has stated his resolve to provide new strategic and operational direction in the prosecution of the fight against terror in the country.
The CDS stated this at his inaugural address at the ceremony to take over from outgoing CDS, Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh, at the Defence Headquarters, Abuja.
“A lot has been done in the ongoing counter-insurgency operation in the North-East; in furtherance of the successes so far achieved, we will look at ways to strengthen the existing arrangement as well as provide new strategic direction.
“We will set specific timelines and milestones to be achieved, look at gaps in the ongoing efforts and do all that is needful, with the support of government, to address these gaps, especially in the areas of actionable intelligence, logistics, communication and other critical equipment,” he said.
While reiterating the importance of collaboration with other security agencies, especially in the areas of intelligence gathering, Olonisakin promised to improve on such invaluable collaborations.
“We must explore every available means to obtain real-time and actionable intelligence in all our operations,” he stated, and promised to strengthen the Military Command Control Centre with necessary personnel and equipment for greater coordination of the North-East operation, in line with presidential directives.
