NASS cuts 30 agencies' 2018 budget to fund 2019 elections

National Assembly on Wednesday slashed the budget of thirty agencies for the funding of 2019 general elections.The total amount requested by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and Security agencies for the conduct of General elections was N242 billion.

In the virement by the National Assembly, N121 billion was removed for the budget of thirty agencies while N121 billion was removed from Service Wide Votes.National Assembly had vired N242 billion from Service Wide Votes.

But, the lawmakers rescinded their decision by slashing budget of Ministries, Department and Agencies in order to finance 2019 elections.According to Senator Danjuma Goje while presenting the report,the Committee decided to rescind its decision because of some obvious and imminent issues of national socio-economic important.

Among others agencies N11 billion deducted from Ministry of Agriculture, N8.8 billion vired from the Ministry budget and National Planing , N828.5 million vired from Ministry of Communication and Technology budget, N2 billion was vired from Ministry of Defence Budget, N10. 2 billion was vired from Ministry of Education, N1.5 billion was vired from Federal Capital Territory Administration budget.

In addition, N25 billion vired from Ministry of Works, Power and Housing, N1.2 billion vired from Presidency, N7.4 billion vired from Science and Technology, N20 million vired from Ministry if Petroleum, N6 billion vired from Office of Secretary General of Federation, N1.1 billion vired from Office of National Security Adviser, N1.1 billion vired from Ministry of Niger Delta, N319 million from Ministry of Women affair , N2.2 billion deducted from Ministry of Transportation.

Also, N157 million was removed from ICPC budget, N1.6 billion was vired from Ministry of Interior, N557 million was removed from Ministry of Justice budget, N170 million was removed from National Human Right Budget, N461 . N1.2 billion was removed from Presidency budget , N121 billion was removed from Service Wide Votes.

Buhari
had sent the N242 billion virement request for the election before the lawmakers went on recess in July.In the budget, the office of the national security adviser (ONSA) got N9.4 billion while the Department of State Services (DSS) got N10.2 billion.

A further breakdown shows that the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) got N3.57 billion, Nigeria Police Force got N27.3 billion while N2.6 billion went to the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).
