National Assembly Joint Committee on INEC on Monday adopted N143 billion elections budget presented by President Muhammadu Buhari.Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had presented N189 billion budget for considerations.
However, addressing newsmen after the closed door meeting, the chairman of the Joint Committee, Senator Suleiman Nazif stated that the committee has resolved to adopt N143 billion budget presented by Mr. President against N189 billion .
The chairman however asked the INEC to present the budget of N143 billion before the Committee tomorrow for consideration . Nazif said,” The Joint Committee sat and deliberate d the position to adopt the N143 billion as presented by Mr. President, at this point INEC has an opportunity to re-priotize and this committee will be reconvening tomorrow by 1:00pm.”
President Buhari had requested the Senate’s approval of N242.45 billion to commence preparations for 2019 general elections.Part of the funds, according to the President’s request, will also be given to the Department of State Service and other security agencies for the same purpose.
The request was contained in a letter addressed to President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, dated July 11 and personally signed by Mr Buhari.Buhari requested that out of the needed figure, N164.10 billion should be provided through virement or supplementation of 2018 Budget.
