National Assembly Legislative Aides Forum ( NASSLAF) on Tuesday threatened to shut down the National Assembly if the Management of Apex lawmaking Institution fails to pay their allowances totaling N5.8billion before the resumption of 25th September, 2018 resumption date of NASS.
Protesting at the main building of the National Assembly, legislative Aides in their hundreds were shouting “we are aides and not slaves, pay us our entitlements” .
Leading the protesters, the chairman of the association, Comrade Sam Melaye, told journalist that their entitlements totalling about N5.8 billion as at present and the allowance must be paid before resumption of the lawmakers this month failure of which will lead to shut down of the federal Parliament.
According to him, we have not been paid Duty Tour Allowances (DTA) for the past three which is over N2bn now and training allowances which based on calculation of N1bn per year .
In his words,” By laid down procedures and yearly budgetary provisions of N250m on quarterly basis , each of the legislatives aides is expected to go for training on the template of capacity building the totality of which is N1bn per year but for the past three years, no category of the aides have been sent on any training , let alone , paid the required allowances .”
He disclosed that the legislative aides through their Union have made concerted efforts to get the attention of the Management of the National Assembly over the outstanding allowances, but nothing come out of it.
It was gathered that the Clerk to the Senate , Nelson Ayewoh in his capacity as Acting Clerk to NASS presently, had audience with the aggrieved aides in his office.
