Minimum Wage: Labour commences indefinite nationwide strike Thursday

OBIORA IFOH, Abuja

Organised Labour in Nigeria has directed all their affiliate unions to commence mobilisation immediately for an effective strike action, nation-wide effective from Midnight of Wednesday, 26th September.

In a memo addressed to all Industrial Unions and all Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC State Councils, General Secretary of NLC, Dr. Peter Ozo-Eson said, “This is to inform you that the Organised Labour shall commence nation-wide warning strike in respect of the non-implementation of the National Minimum Wage, effective from Midnight of Wednesday, 26th September, 2018.

“All Industrial Unions and all State Councils are to commence mobilisation immediately for an effective strike action, nation-wide. A formal notification letter will be sent later in the day.”

Combined labour team two weeks ago in Lagos gave the Government a 14 days ultimatum for foot dragging on the issues of workers wages. It further issued a reminder on Wednesday last week but the government is yet to come to agreement with the Labour. The ultimatum will however end on Wednesday 26th of September.

NLC president ,Comrade Ayuba Wabba at the National Executive Council of the NLC had warned that government position was against the principle of collective bargaining as provided in ILO convention 98 and convention 131 on minimum wage setting process

The NEC expressed concern over the unilateral adjournment of the negotiation sine die by the federal government on the day that the tripartite committee was expected to complete his assignment.
