Man, 40, released from Ikoyi prison 7 years after detention

•Another jailed for stealing N2.3m car

Forty-year old Dona Jamari accused of armed robbery in 2009 was released yesterday morning from Ikoyi prison custody by Justice S.S. Ogunsanya of the Lagos State High Court.
Dona, accused of stealing from Habib Saidu, a Samsung handset worth N16,000. At the point where he robbed Saidu, he was armed with a sharp dagger knife, razor blade and charms.
The incident happened on March 25, 2009 and since then; the accused had been remanded in Ikoyi prison.
At the proceedings, the prosecutor told the court that the accused committed armed robbery contrary to section 402 (2) of Criminal code law cap c.17 (2) Laws of Lagos State.
Counsel from the office of the Public Defender argued that as the prosecution was not forthcoming with witness to the allegation, the court released the accused from the Ikoyi prison.
They said there was no ground for the accused to continueto remain in prison custody.
In another development, a 39-year-old man, George Augustine Orhaware, was yesterday convicted by an ikeja Magistrate Court Lagos for conspiracy and stealing.
The convict had earlier pleaded guilty of conspiring to steal a Toyota Sienna car with registration number KJA 407 DC, property of Rosemary Aigoro, worth N2.3million on December 7, 2015 at No 4, Rev. Adedorah close, Ikeja.
The police prosecutor, Mr. Emuerhi Benson told the court that the offence was committed and punishable under Section 285 (10) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2011.
George, after pleading guilty on a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing was sentenced to one year imprisonment by the presiding Magistrate, Mrs. O. A. Olayinka.
