Imo Pension Verification Exercise Uncoveres 8,549 Ghost Pensioners

Imo budgets N197.6bn for 2020 fiscal year

Governor Emeka Ihedioha of Imo state has revealed that the recent verification exercise carried out on Imo pensioners, uncovered 8,549 Ghost pensioners.

Also the verification exercise the Governor went on saved the state Government wooping sum of N280 million.

He explained this while addressing Imo people in a statewide radio broadcast Thursday on the issue relating to the pensions and why the delay in the payment.

The Governor, however said that the payment of the pensions commenced in ernest, Thursday October 18 2019 and promised that henceforth, pensioners will no longer suffer before getting their pensions.

He said further that the commencement of the payment of the pensions fulfills his promise during his campaign that he would accord priority attention to pensioners when he comes in as the state Governor.

However, he revealed that his administration will be paying out the sum of N1,218,175,387 as monthly pension to pensioners, pointing out that his administration inherited six years arrears of pension in both the state and the 27 local government councils.

“I would like to be appeal to all our citizens that the challenge of payment of pension bills standing over N1.2 billion monthly is very enormous and this calls for sacrifices by all citizens”.

According to him, “we are confronted with the necessity to source for the revenue to ensure a good life for our own senior citizens”.

The chairman of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Imo state Sir P. Ugochukwu in his reaction, thanked the Governor for keeping faith with this promise by commencing the payment pensions to the pensioners.

He said “ I am overjoyed and that is the mood of my members across the state and local government areas”.
