Imo State Government has commenced the final verification of it’s pensioners who had been without pay for over four years.
According to a statement from the Government House Owerri, the verification exercise will take place simultaneously at the headquarters of the 27 local government in the State from September 4, 2019, between the hours of 8.00am and 4pm.
The statement signed by the special adviser to the Governor on media, Hon. Steve Osuji indicated that the verification exercise for the pensioners in Owerri municipal council and Oguta local government area will hold at Emmanuel College along Douglas road Owerri and Oguta civic centre respectively.
The statement further said that the exercise would commence with the State pensioners first, the local government pensioners takes their turn.
It added that the dates and venues for the verification of the retired Judges, permanent secretaries and magistrates would be announced soon. However, it would be recalled that throughout the last four years of the last administration, Chief Rochas Okorocha, these senior citizens of the state were treated with levity and never got their pensions paid.
The state therefore witnessed so many deaths of pensioners who never got their pensions and gratuity before they died.
Reacting to this present move to verify them, one of the surviving pensioners, Chief Godson Onyekanobi commended the present administration of Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha for seeing it as a priority, the welfare of pensioners in the State.
He urged that this present verification should be actually once and for all as stated by the government statement.
