TIME was, when hair-styling was regarded   as the pre-occupation of women. Not anymore. Today, hair services have been taken over by young men   who are steadily displacing the women from the vocation.
One finds them everywhere, especially under the busy Ikeja Bridge where they ply their trade in makeshift shops. The more resourceful among them have gone as far as owning their own shops.
On e of such young men is Mr Lawrence Ifeanyi  Odili, the Chief Executive Officer of The Lawrence Touch Beauty Saloon. When Daily Champion visited his office located in Yaba International Market, Tejuosho, Lagos, he was already fixing the hair of a female client.
Asked why he is in the business of providing beauty   services to women, Odili said: I’m driven by  a passion to make people look good. I had to resign from my place of work as a teacher at Glory international school Ebute Meta, Lagos for this vocation. I have in business for seven years and I can assure you that this is the best thing that has ever happened to me.”
Odili graduated from Federal Polytechnic Ofa, Kwara state, in 2005 where he studied Accountancy.
Odili believes that the men are having an edge over their female counterparts in the business. “Most women who come to us confess that they prefer that their hair be   made-up by men because they think that the men know which style fits them better than the women.
“It is also the general belief of most women that male stylists are more careful, tolerant and accommodating than the counterparts.”
Continuing, he said: “Frankly speaking, female stylists cannot compete with us, male stylists. Most of us go the extra mile to prove that we  are better off than my female colleagues. The women are coming to us in large numbers.”
He advised young people to acquire vocational skills to enable become self-employed  instead of looking for white –collar jobs that are not readily available.
