Ahead the 2019 general elections, a some human right group, Micro Entrepreneurs has endorsed Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for re-election as the next governor of Lagos State citing his achievements in this first tenure.
The group said that Ambode has in the last three years plus in office, supported the growth of small businesses in Lagos.
Briefing Newsmen in Lagos, the group maintained that Ambode has within his first tenure in office as the governor of Lagos State made loans available to micro entrepreneurs, adding that most of the beneficiaries are not from the Yoruba speaking states. They however, maintained that various infrastructural developments presently going on in every local government in Lagos, initiated by Ambode is for the good of Lagosians, hence the need for a second tenure in order to complete the projects.
National President, Citizen Protection and Enlightenment Initiative (CPEI), Comrade Prince Saviour Iche that the group’s endorsement of Ambode was not because of millions of naira but the visible achievements recorded by his administration in Lagos since he became governor.
According to him, many entrepreneurs have benefitted from the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF) set aside to create affordable access to funding for small businesses, grow, expand, create wealth and put people to work.“Some of our members benefitted millions of naira from the empowerment program which no governor has done in the history of Lagos State. We need to encourage him to complete the infrastructural developments he started.“Ambode’s administration has succeeded in bringing down the rate of crime in the state by bringing in the necessary amenities for both the police and the para-military in order to safeguard the state.
There are some areas he has not done well, which I believe he will do well. Before now, harassment from Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA) and Vehicle Inspection Officer (VIO) was a treat to many, but not anymore because of his intervention.
“On the issue of funding, he is not tribalistic. I have some of my friends from other tribes that benefitted from the funds unlike what it used to be in the past, that is laudable and we need to encourage him,” he said.
While calling on, called on Lagosians to come out in mass on the forth coming, there is need for continuity, most of the projects are masses oriented and we want him to continue. The reason some people are giving for not allowing him for the second term are not for the welfare of the citizens but personal interest and we have to condemn that. Also speaking, Secretary of the group, Mr. Kingsley described the present administration in Lagos as youth oriented, adding that the empowerment programs has boosted the growth of businesses within the state.
He said, “We need to encourage him to do more for the youths. This government has continued to give support to the domestic/ sexual violence response team in the state. We believe that the government of Ambode should be given another four years chance. He is the only detribalized governor in the history of Lagos State. The only governor that grants loan without considering the tribe for the development of the state.
On his own, Comrade Daniel Oguine from the Committee for the Defense of Human Right (CDHR), maintained that the issue of godfatherism is among the reasons Nigeria is moving backwards. A situation where one single man dictates for everybody, that is not good enough for democracy. Rule of law is even hampered in this situation.“Though Ambode has some areas of weakness, especially in the area of waste management but as we all know, no one is perfect. Another area he didn’t get right was the Land use Charge and people are complaining and I know as a listening governor he is, he would make amends.
“But in the area of infrastructure, Ambode has made significant impact in Lagos State. Another area I must commend him is that LSTEF loan scheme aimed at empowering the masses not minding the tribe. No governor in the history of Lagos State has done that. Also, he wants to introduce a world class transportation system in the state which would ease of traffic within the state, the man is putting up structures to ensure that Lagosians have a better life, and if he is not given the opportunity to complete these projects, we shall all suffer it.
“He choose to spend money on infrastructure and not on individuals, the best thing for us to do now is to make sure that he returns as the governor of Lagos State in 2019.
For a better society
