.Lalong condemns killing, irate mob attacks journalists

Journalists who made their way to Loh Pam-Dyet community early Monday morning narrowly escaped being killed as an irate mob almost took their vexation on the innocent journalists, who were at the scene to report the unfortunate incidence of Sunday night.

Eleven persons were killed and 12 others were left with different degree of injuries after unidentified gunmen attacked Loh Pam-Dyet, Dwei community near Rayfield in Jos South local government area of Plateau state.

The journalists include reporters and cameramen fron Channels tv, AIT, TVC and Silverbird.Mathew Chuwang Rwang, the youth leader of Du district, who gave an eyewitness account of what happened said some strange gunmen visited the community on Sunday night.

The spokesman of the Plateau state police command DSP Mathias Tyopev, who confirmed the incident, said the attackers stormed the community on Sunday night before attacking unsuspecting residents. There was tension in the area on Monday morning as sympathisers gathered to make sense of what transpired while corpses were being evacuated.

Plateau State Governor Jang, who is among the President’s delegation to China, has since condemned the attack, commiserating with the people of Plateau State over the heinous attack.According to the state Commissioner of Information, Yakubu Datti, in a statement, the Governor has instructed the security agencies to fish out the perpetrators, as they ensure the safety and security of the immediate environment and the entire state.

Members of the public are called upon to resist any temptation to self-help as these will be playing to the script of these perpetrators whose ultimate aim is to return the State to the dark era of bloodletting. However the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Plateau state has taken a swipe at the handling of the security situation in the state.

John Akans, the state Publicity Secretary in a statement in Jos, said this has become clear that the government has abandoned its responsibility of protecting its citizens. “What is the primary responsibility of government if not to protect people’s lives and properties?”

The PDP also said that It is unfortunate and embarrassing that Governor Lalong went on lobbying the Presidency to be part of Mr. President’s visit to China, Most disheartening is the fact that when his request was turned down, out of desperation and lack of priority, he on his own traveled to meet with Mr. President in China, leaving his people in a traumatized condition.
