A non -governmental organisation, the Special Persons Association of Nigeria (SPAN), has called on the federal government to establish and equip a special parastatal to be known as the Ministry for the Handicapped without further delay.
Making this call was the National Co-coordinator, Special Persons Association of Nigeria (SPAN), Pastor. Chidi Nwankwo, while delivering a speech at the group’s annual National Award for the Handicapped at Eko Hotels recently.
Nwankwo insisted that it was possible for the government to establish the ministry specially designed to take care of various kinds of physically challenged people; noting that it would only require the right caliber of people with the necessary level of discipline, commitment and sincerity of purpose to make the dream a reality.
To the SPAN coordinator, the ultimate happiness and life fulfillment of those who have one physical disability or the other lies in making them feel recognized and protected by government that can give them such opportunity.
“This opportunity, when afforded the handicapped ones in the society, would reduce massively, the rate of destitution, street begging, juvenile delinquency, drug abuse and many other social vices”; Nwankwo stated.
This belief, according to him, has informed the association and his ministry’s reason for making the crusade for the care of the handicapped their priority and main objective.
In our church, we celebrate these people (special persons) from time to time; making them feel happy, relaxed, beloved and appreciated as wonderful creatures of God even as each of them have their own inborn talents, gifts and abilities waiting for tapping exploration and exposure even to the pride of the nation and glory of God.
The cleric and social crusader cited the case of Stevie Wonder who is blind but has remained a source of pride to the American nation through his dexterity on the piano and global fame via music; adding the case of the pastor without arms and legs but who can do certain things that even the physically fit can not endeavour.
