Former President Shagari excited over excellence performance of NOUN


Second Republic President Shehu Shagari Monday expressed delight that the National Open University of Nigeria NOUN which he establised in 1983 has become the largest University in Africa with a population of 250,000 students.Shagari who urged the Federal Government to provide more funds for the running of the Institution, commended the management of the University for excellent performance.

The former President spoke when NOUN management team led by the new Vice Chancellor Professor Abdalla Uba Adamu visited him at his residence in sokoto.

Earlier, the Vice Chancillor praised the former President vision for establishing the University as it provides opportunity for Nigerians of all classes to

acquire qualitative higher education free including prison inmates across the country.

Speaking at the Government House sokoto during a separate  visit,  Professor Adamu urged Governor Aminu Tambuwal to key into the World Bank which has made funds available for the sponsorship of vulnerable and indigent Nigerians in the University

He expressed regret however that none of the states in Nigerian has availed its people for the utilisation of such idling funds.

Responding, Governor Tambuwal commended the university for providing the opportunity to Nigerians even retirees and other senior citizens of Nigeria to acquire university education.

”Former President Olusegun Obasanjo does not hide his joy of being an alumnus of the NOUN,” Tambuwal stated.

The governor directed the Secretary to the State Government to immediately provide a land for the construction of the permanent site of the study centre of the university  in sokoto state.
