 ADEKUNLE ADESUJI, Abuja

Senate yesterday appealed to President Goodluck Jonathan to forgive the suspended Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of  Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Danjuma Sheni over his unauthorized recall of Nigerian envoys in South Africa in the wake of recent xenophobic attacks in the country against Nigerians and other African immigrants.

Daily champion recalled that President Jonathan last week through a statement issued by his media aide, Reuben Abati, suspended the permanent secretary for the huge embarrassment his unilateral action on the envoys caused the Nigerian government.

According to Abati , “The permanent secretary was suspended for causing the president embarrassment. In this age of diplomatic dispatches, you don’t need to recall or invite any envoy before you ask questions. The man (Sheni) has been queried and suspended for carrying out such action unilaterally.”

In a move to save the embattled Permanent Secretary from total dismissal from Service, the Senate Deputy Leader, Abdul Ningi (PDP Bauchi Central), raised the matter on the floor of the senate , calling on the president to tamper Justice with mercy.

Ningi who raised the matter through order 43, requested the Senate to plead with the President to forgive the erring Permanent Secretary, a request to which the Deputy Senate President, EKweremadu who presided over the session, said would be forwarded to the President in the spirit of tempering Justice with mercy.

He said: “The issue is a very sensitive one but as submitted and requested, the well tabled request would be forwarded to the President by the Senate”

Ningi had during his submissions on the suspended permanent secretary said: “I urge this Senate not to look the other way at the president, Commander in Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces to tamper justice with mercy.

“It is indeed his responsibility, powers and jurisdiction and I think it’s important at times like this that the Senate president should urge the president to tamper justice with mercy, so as to save the permanent Secretary from total dismissal from service.

“He did the wrong thing at the wrong time and he should not have done it because of the mood so the president, a humble man should please tamper justice with mercy.”
