FG inaugurates verification agent for saving one million lives programmes

The Federal Government has inaugurated an independent verification agent for the $500 million performance based health intervention grants to be disbursed to 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja.The Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole, inaugurated the agent during a retreat organized by the Federal Programme Management Unit of the Ministry in Abuja.

The Minister charged the agent to serve to the best of its ability being an independent and credible assessor of the performance of the programme implementation to both Federal and State levels.

According to the Minister, the Federal Ministry of Health will not interfere with the activities of the agent in any way but rather allow the agent to do its work.

The agent,  he said, is expected to calculate how much States and Federal Government will earn based on review of the independent surveys.

Earlier the National Programme Manager, Dr. Ibrahim Kana, had said the independent verification agent, Hospital Assist Nigeria Ltd was appointed by the Federal Ministry of Finance and expected to report to the programme steering committee and programme management unit.

He said the 50ML for R was launched in response to the poor health outcomes in the country most especially mothers and children.

It is estimated  that almost one million women and children die yearly and 50ML represents a bold attempt to improve maternal and child health outcomes so that they are more in keeping with the country’s level of wealth and focuses on six important aspects (pillars) of maternal new born and child health (MNCH) that can save lives.

Dr. Kana, while thanking the two Ministers of Health for support the unit also said the programme has already disbursed a grant of $1.5 million each to the 36 states and the FCT.
