Equity market records positive trend, increasing by N334bn

Trading activities on the floor of Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) last week closed higher, appreciating by N334 billion.
According to capital market operators, the growth profile was due to investor’s expectation for positive earnings reporting season.

Meanwhile the transactions at the NSE during the week showed that market capitalization of listed equities appreciated by N334 billion or 2.92 per cent to close the week at N11.758 trillion from N11.424 trillion reported the previous week.

The NSE All Share Index appreciated by 893.56 basis points to 31529.92 points from 30636.36 recorded the previous week.

Similarly, all other indices finished higher with the exception of the NSE Industrial Goods Index that depreciated by 0.66 per cent.

Interestingly the NSE Corporate Governance index grew by 80.69 to 1278.33, NSE Premium index added 18.62 to 2161.26 points while the NSE Main Board Index added 63.73 to 1465.57 points and the NSE 30 index increased by 1.70 to 791.76 points.

Also, NSE 30 index added 55.11 to 1421.80, NSE Banking index grew by 32.13 to 428.72 points, NSE Insurance index went up by 4.88 to 126.86, NSE AFR Bank value index surged by 50.66 to 1,084.08, NSE AFR Div Yield index advanced by 81.05 to 1472.34, NSE Consumer Index inched up by 28.58 to 725.31, NSE Oil and Gas index appreciated by 7.09 to 286.18, NSE Lotus II 24.33 to 2253.54 points while NSE Pension index climbed by 40.67 to 1219.43 points.

Investors during the week traded turnover of 1.894 billion shares worth N26.884 billion in 19,213 deals were traded this week by investors on the floor of the Exchange in contrast to a total of 1.452 billion shares valued at N14.788 billion that exchanged hands last week in 19,318 deals.

The Financial Services Industry led the activity chart with 1.498 billion shares valued at N19.724 billion traded in 12,581 deals; thus contributing 79.10 per cent and 73.37 per cent to the total equity turnover volume and value respectively. The Consumer Goods Industry followed with 144.426 million shares worth N4.552 billion in 2,484 deals. The third place was Conglomerates Industry with a turnover of 143.320 million shares worth N220.050 million in 998 deals.

Trading in the top three equities namely, United Bank for Africa Plc, Zenith Bank Plc and FBN Holdings Plc accounted for 791.318 million shares worth N10.817 billion in 5,046 deals, contributing 41.79 per cent and 40.23 per cent to the total equity turnover volume and value respectively.

An analysis of the investment showed that 53 equities appreciated in price during the week, higher than 16 reported in the previous week. The NSE weekly report indicated that 21 quoted companies depreciated in price, against 50 equities of the previous week, while 94 equities remained unchanged against 102 equities recorded in the preceding week.

Regency Assurance Plc led gainers table during the week, gaining 19.05 per cent or N0.04 kobo to close at N0.25 kobo, Dangote Flour Mills Plc followed with a gain of 18.10 per cent or N1.05 kobo to close at N6.85 kobo while Guaranty Trust Bank added 14.69 per cent or N4.95 kobo to close at N38.65 kobo. Other companies appreciated in price were Mcnichols Plc 13.89 per cent, AIICO Insurance Plc 12.50 per cent, University Press Plc 12.50 per cent , Associated Bus Company 11.11 per cent, Cutix Plc 11.11 per cent, Eterna Plc 10.59 per cent and Beta glass Plc 10.00.

On the contrary, Royal Exchange Plc topped losers chart, during the week, shedding 13.33 per cent or N0.04 kobo to close at N0.26 kobo, Guinea Insurance Plc trailed with 13.04 per cent or N0.03 kobo to close at N0.20 kobo while Champion Breweries Plc dropped by 10.00 or N0.18 kobo to close at N1.62 kobo. Other firms depreciated in price were Inter linked Technologies Plc 10 per cent, E-tranzact International Plc 9.85 per cent, Academy Press 8.89 per cent, Trans Nationwide Express Plc 8.70 per cent, A.G.Leventis Nigeria Plc 6.90 per cent, Consolidated Hallmark Insurance Plc 6.90 and Livestock’s Feeds Plc 5.66 per cent.

Also traded during the week were a total of 6,590 units of Exchange Traded Products (ETPs) valued at N55,711.29 executed in 2 deals compared with a total of 668 units valued at N58,897.50 that was transacted last week in 21 deals.

A total of 2,668 units of Federal Government Bonds valued at N2.886 million were traded this week in 14 deals compared with a total of 4,336 units valued at N4.308 million transacted last week in 26 deals
