Equity market: Investors traded N18.431bn shares last week

A total turnover of 2.063 billion shares worth N18.431 billion in 16,778 deals were traded this week by investors on the floor of the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) in contrast to a total of 1.511 billion shares valued at N16.193 billion that exchanged hands last week in 15,544 deals.

The Financial Services industry led the activity chart with 1.833 billion shares valued at N12.367 billion traded in 11,116 deals; thus contributing 88.82per cent and 67.10per cent to the total equity turnover volume and value respectively.

However, the Industrial Goods industry followed with 102.535 million shares worth N2.236 billion in 1,148 deals, while the third place was Consumer Goods industry with a turnover of 46.061 million shares worth N1.676 billion in 1,965 deals.

Trading in the top three equities namely, Jaiz Bank Plc, Access Bank Plc and Zenith Bank Plc. accounted for 1.118 billion shares worth N8.018 billion in 4,492 deals, contributing 54.18per cent and 43.50 per cent to the total equity turnover volume and value respectively.

The NSE All-Share Index (ASI) and market Capitalization both appreciated by 0.08% to close the week at 26,314.49 and N12.810 trillion respectively.

Similarly, all other indices finished higher with the exception of NSE premium, NSE ASeM, NSE Consumer Goods, NSE Oil/Gas and NSE Lotus II Indices which declined by 0.34per cent, 0.18per cent, 5.91per cent, 0.25per cent and 2.63per cent respectively.

The NSE ASI appreciated by 21.19 basis points to 26314.49 points from 26293.30 points, the NSE Main Board index increased by 5.96 to 1062.07, NSE 30 index gained 12.64 to 1078.92, NSE Corporate Governance added 38.34 to 976.23 points, NSE Banking Index grew by 26.93 to 343.49, NSE Pension. Index went up by 0.52 basis points to 120.41 points , NSE Afr Bank Value index 84.14 to 919.07 points , NSE Afr Div Yield index increased by 54.61 to 1217.40, NSE Meri Growth index 11.74 to 1268.78 points,

NSE Meri Value index went up by 111.58 to 1262.13 points, ​ NSE industrial Goods index rose by 21.43 to 1069.22 points.

Interesting, thirty equities appreciated in price during the week, lower than twenty-seven equities in the previous week. Twenty-eight equities depreciated in price, higher than eighteen equities in the previous week, while one hundred and eight equities remained unchanged, lower than one hundred and twenty-one equities recorded in the preceding week.

Law Union and Rock Insurance Plc led gainers table during the week, appreciating by 30.95 per cent or N0.13 kobo to close at N0.55 kobo, Jaiz Bank Plc followed with a gain of ​ 18.37 per cent or N0.09 kobo to close at N0.58 kobo, Access Bank Plc added 17.95 per cent or N1.40 kobo to close at N9.20 kobo.

Other companies appreciated in price were FCMB group Plc 16.25 per cent, United Bank for Africa Plc 13.79 per cent, Guranty Trust Bank Plc 13.49 per cent , Cement Company of Northern Nigeria 10.06 per cent, Champion Breweries Plc 10.00, FBNHoldings Plc 9.43 per cent, ​ Cornerstone Insurance Plc 8.89 per cent.

Unilever Nigeria Plc recorded the highest loss during the week, declining by ​ 26.59 per cent or N7.10 kobo to close at N19.60 kobo, International Breweries trailed with a loss of 25.40 or N3.20 kobo to close at N9.40 kobo, Fidson Healthcare Plc fell by 12.50 per cent or N0.50 kobo to close at ​ N3.50 kobo. Other firms that depreciated in price were Presco Plc ​ 9.90 per cent , Capital Hotel Plc 9.80 per cent, 9.84 per cent, ​ MRS oil Nigeria Plc 9.73 per cent, Ikeja Hotel Plc 9.35 per cent, UACN Property Development Company Plc 9.35, ​ UPDC Real Estate management ​ down to 9.18, MCNICHOLs Plc 8.70 per cent.
