Equity market: Investors last week traded 1.272 bn shares

Equity Market declines sheds N23bn

A total turnover of 1.272 billion shares worth N18.750 billion in 19,482 deals were traded this week​ by investors on the floor of the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) in contrast to a total of 1.147 billion shares valued at​ N14.082 billion that exchanged hands last week in 17,980 deals.

The Financial Services industry, measured by volume led the activity chart with 945.947 million​ shares valued at N9.743 billion traded in 11,046 deals; thus contributing 74.38% and 51.96per cent to the​ total equity turnover volume and value respectively.

The Consumer Goods industry followed with 82.934 million shares worth N5.556 billion in 2,862 deals.

The third place was Conglomerates Industry with a turnover of 80.821 million shares worth N267.101 million in 1,163 deals.​

Trading in the top three equities namely, FBN Holdings Plc, Guaranty Trust Bank Plc and Access​ Bank Plc measured by volume accounted for 482.334 million shares worth N6.561 billion in 4,724 deals, contributing 37.93 per cent and 34.99per cent to the total equity turnover volume and value respectively.​

The NSE All-Share Index (ASI) and carket capitalization both deppreciated by 0.29per cent to close the week at 27,698.69 and N13.484 trillion respectively.

All other indices finished higher with the exception of NSE All-Share, NSE Main Board and NSE​ Asem Indices which depreciated by 0.29per cent, 0.86per cent and 0.60per cent.

However, the NSE All Share Index ​ declined by 80.31 basis points to 27698.69 from 27779.000 traded the previous week, while the NSE 30 Index increased by 28.88 to 1131.21 points, NSE Corporate Governance Index added 29.44 to 1009.94, NSE Premium Index gained 4.70 to 2325.11, NSE Banking Index added 6.23 to 344.35 points, NSE Pension Index grew by 24.76 basis points to 989.72 points.

NSE Insurance ​ Index went up 5.11 to 110.56 points, NSE AFR Bank Value index advanced by 24.53 to 906.06 points, NSE AFR Div Yield Index surged by 79.08 to 1251.04 points, NSE Meri Growth index added 62.36 to 1362.70 points, NSE Meri Value index gained 24.25 to 1163.99, NSE Consumer Goods Index 11.53 to 533.32 points, NSE Oil and Gas Index gained 1.03 basis points to 213.67 points, NSE Lotus II grew by 27.89 to 1755.97 points, NSE Industrial Goods Index rose by 27.89 basis points to 1755.97 points.

During the week, Cornerstone Insurance Plc led gainers table, gaining 30.00 per cent or N0.09 kobo to close at N0.39 kobo, Livestock Feeds Plc followed with a gain of 28.21 per cent or N0.11 kobo to close at ​ N0.50 kobo, Stanbic IBTC Holdings gained 22.43 per cent or N7.85 kobo to close at N42.85 kobo. Other Firms appreciated in price were ​ NEM Insurance Plc 20.79 per cent, UACN Plc19.70 per cent, PZ Cussons Nigeria Plc ​ 19.49 per cent, Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc 15.10 per cent, Okomu Oil Palm 13.53 per cent , Jaiz Bank Plc 13.16 per cent Linkage Assurance Plc 12 .00 per cent.

Airtel Africa Plc recorded the highest loss during the week, shedding 19.00 or N66.50 kobo to close at N283.50 kobo, Champion Breweries Plc trailed with a loss of 11.54 per cent or N0.15 kobo to close at N1.15 kobo, Portland Paints and Products Nigeria Plc fell by ​ 9.72 per cent or N0.24 kobo to close at N2.23 kobo. Other firms that recorded price depreciation were NCR Nigeria Plc 9.09 per cent, Associated Bus Company Plc 8.33 per cent, Chams Plc 7.69 per cent, Sterling Bank ​ Plc 7.23 per cent, R.T Briscoe Plc 6.90 per cent , The Initiates Plc 6.67 per cent and Lasaco Assurance Plc 6.67 per cent.
