FRIDAY OBOH, Sokoto
The Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Northwest geopolitical zone, Aminchi Baraya, has observed that problems usually begin to manifest during the counting of votes and transportation of results.
He, therefore, charged the Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) to ensure that the police accompany the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, officials from the polling unit to the state headquarters of the commission.
He stated that elections were very trying time for the police as they are very stressful but only for about three weeks, adding that their past experience within and outside Nigeria coupled with the recent trainings they received had adequately prepared them for the task ahead.
Addressing men and officers of the Sokoto State Police Command on Thursday, the DIG said he was in the command and Zone 10 to ensure that the level of preparedness before the postponement last week was still intact.
According to him, the police were ready to provide the enabling environment for voters to cast their votes and return home peacefully.
He also assured all policemen yet to receive their election duty allowance that they would be paid and directed them to forward their account details to the appropriate quarters.
He told the men and officers to be alert at their duty posts an arrest all those involved in breaches of the electoral law including thugs and that they should avoid accepting gifts including water and food.
He also reminded them of the new INEC guideline which bars voters from taking their phones into the polling booths and asked them to ensure strict compliance.
He charged them to ensure the protection of NYSC members deployed on electoral duties as Nigerians usually feel very bitter if anything happened to any of them.
