•With thanks to Gernot Rohr
“I may be accused of laying stress on little things, of being beside the mark, of going into impertinent or ridiculous details of sounding my own praise, of giving scandal, but this is a case above all others, in which I am bound to follow my own light and to speak out my own heart”
– John Henry Newman
Money is a language that everybody seems to understand. Yes! When you motivate a people positively, pragmatically with cheers you reap prosperity, little wonder, the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo, witnessed the atmosphere of Pleasure, Play and Prosperity when the Super “Superlative” Eagles once branded “Super Chickens” suddenly thrashed the highly rated Indomitable Lions of Cameroon with four unreplied goals and pulling an all one draw scoreline in Yaounde, Cameroon, on a double header FIFA World Cup qualifying series few days ago.We have had a Nigerian football Federation (NFF) under President Amaju Pinnick who came into the Abuja Glasshouse with so much optimism to transform the Super Eagles of Nigeria, but met a brickwall in the hands of detractors, whom amongst were members of the FA Board, Stakeholders, Politicians, and the likes; and the once dreaded Eagles of Nigeria whose wings had clipped under various indigenous coaches suffered much humiliation within the African context of minnow football nations. The leadership of the NFF also suffered so much distraction, with the employment of mediocre coaches (locals) and very wrong approach towards assemblage of the national team from time to time, wrong choice of pitch venue, incoherent administrative protocols, lack of motivation, broken promises, orchestrated with hate, slander and show of power tussles.
The past coaches whether (late) absconded or sacked had so much pride, envy and show of self aggrandizement flowing in their veins. These past coaches had a catalogue of issues either with one NFF administrator or the other, had bad blood with one player to another; exuding animosity amongst selves for one reason or more as the case may arise.
The football governing body became their own dragon fighting themselves over matters that ordinarily would have been resolved in the closet, rather would prefer to make it a public show of shame. The FA has had this record of messy attitude dealing with the coaches, players and journalists, especially on the ones who are critical of their exuberance evident in their failures. The Ministry of Sports which is the government’s arm to making sure that all goes well in the administration of football and other sports in the country do not play its role as professional in the running of the game in collaboration with the NFF! It is quite surprising in most cases when you hear the minister of sports, Solomon Dalung, contradicting himself with statements not aligning with sports terms, organization and support. I feel bad most times when he speaks in contrary on issues he is expected to display professionalism, instead he is caught napping on the wrong side like a “neophyte” he is! Sad for our football and its development.
It took Amaju, the FA President quite a distance to retrace his long taken wrong steps to remember that it is only articulated professionals mostly foreigners who can salvage the already sunk Super Eagles of Nigeria to reckoning. This is the late move he reluctantly took after much constructive criticism from those in my school of thought that is now yielding him and everyone the most expected football dividend.
There is no doubting the fact that if Gernot Rohr had been contracted right from the time the NFF gambled with late Stephen Keshi and absconded Sunday Oliseh, by now, the Eagles would have come beyond this level. However, the much talked about foreign coach, German Gernot Rohr has so far proved his professional expertise in handling a sensitive national team like the Eagles. He has further shown that he has a better knowledge of the game than his local predecessors having gone extra miles to prove that those advocates of foreign coach are worthy football bookmakers.
Having said that, the Super Eagles of Nigeria beating the Cameroons 5-1 goals aggregate are sure to be in the FIFA 2018 Mundial in Russia. It is true that Nigeria witnessed a new ray of hope in Pleasure, Play and Prosperity. There was a wild jubilation across the country as business flourished like back in time over the Eagles victory. The traditional winning strategy of the Eagles was seen displayed again in “Wing Plays” of the team scoring formula. The chief motivator of the team, Governor Emmanuel Udom was the hitman of the victorious national team. Kudos! Rohr, you are the Eagles transformer, Pinnick, time to celebrate and thank your critics for a job well done! Up Eagles! Up Nigeria!
