Customs intercepts goods worth N39.054m

The Nigerian Customs Headquarters Monitoring Team Idiroko Axis recently intercepted goods valued at N39,054,500 within two days.
The Team Coordinator, Deputy Comptroller Yahaya Usman Biri, who stated this while chatting with some journalists recently in his office, said the first seizure was on July 31, 2015 along the Lagos Shagamu Expressway while on an information patrol.
Biri  also said his team was trailing the product which they believed must have come from unapproved routes, adding that the consignment was loaded in a DAF truck with registration number XS 250 KTU.
Two suspects, Mr. Maruf Bello and Pastor Ajayi Joshua, were arrested at the point of interception and have been detained in the NCS facility at Ikeja for further interrogation. He put the duty paid value of the consignment at N3.9million.
In the same vein, Biri said that his Team on Saturday, August 1, 2015 intercepted five brand new Toyota Corolla cars while acting on intelligence along the Lagos-Shagamu Expressway.
Five 2015 Toyota Corolla cars with a duty paid value of 35,154,500 were intercepted; thus bringing the DPV of the two seizures to N39, 054,500.
On the position of rice in the tariff, Biri stated that importation of rice was not prohibited but that its importation is restricted to the seaports at a duty and levy of between 10 per cent and 60 per cent, respectively.
On the seized brand new vehicles, he said his team shared intelligence with other Customs Units/Commands on ways of effectively blocking smuggling of items in total disregard to the fiscal policies of the Federal Government.
He stated that smugglers would have a hectic moment with the team in the days ahead following the fine-tuning and re-jigging of its operational modalities in conjunction with other Customs formations.
He promised that his team in concert with other NCS teams would remain undaunted in the discharge of its functions despite the hostility exhibited by smugglers.
He pointed out that his team and others were sincerely committed to the task of suppressing smuggling.
