Councilor detained for alleged killing of relation over missing phone


For allegedly beating his relation, Nnanyere Onyema, to death over missing GSM Phone, a councilor  of Nsogwu  Umunze Ward 2 in Orumba South Local Government Area  of Anambra, Hon. Chidiebere Onyema, is said to have been detained by the police.        Disclosing this to newsmen, the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Ali Okechukwu, said that the councilor is being grilled at the State Intelligence and Investigation Bureau, SIIB, Awka, the state capital.     His words, “investigation is on-going to unravel the cause of the incident’’.According to the mother of the deceased, Mrs. Gloria Onyema, Nnanyere died on May 6 after receiving several beating from Chidiebere on the day of the incident.  The incident she said occurred in the early hours on the fateful day when Chidiebere came to their apartment in the same compound demanding to see the deceased.She said that her husband, Okwudili opened their door and saw Chidiebere who was standing outside, and told him that he would inform Nnanyere that the honourable wanted to see him.     At this juncture, both parents left their home and on return some hours later were told by Nnanyere’s younger brother, Tochukwu, that Nnanyere had been beating to coma by Chidiebere.    The mother said that she went to look for Nnanyere and saw him at Chidiebere’s flat laying helplessly with several wounds on his body.        According to the deceased mother, “when I inquired the reasons for the beating, I was told that my son stole Chidiebere’s mother and sister’s cell phones”.    “I pleaded to pay back the cost of the phones which Chidiebere said was N35, 000. I offered to bring N20, 000 part payment for my son to be released to me so that I can take me to hospital for treatment”.  “On taking my son to the Immaculate Hospital, Umunze for treatment, he was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty,’’ she said.Mr. Jude Umunna, an uncle of the deceased who hailed from Ubahu village in Ezira community in Orumba south LGA described the incident as an “abomination’’.
