The US Open women’s draw has lost its top two seeds after Caroline Wozniacki suffered a shock second-round loss to Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko.The world number two from Denmark has reached the US Open final twice but lost 6-4 6-2 to the world number 36.

Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki beat Australian Sam Stosur 6-3 6-2 in hot conditions to reach the second round of the US Open. Second seed Wozniacki, 28, broke the 2011 champion’s serve five times on a day when temperatures in New York topped 32C with high humidity.

Serena Williams has withdrawn from next week’s Rogers Cup in Canada for personal reasons.The American 23-time Grand Slam singles champion was beaten 6-1 6-0 by Briton Johanna Konta at the most recent Silicon Valley Classic event – the worst defeat of her career.

Murray beats Mackenzie McDonald in Washington Open

Britain’s Andy Murray beat Mackenzie McDonald 3-6 6-4 7-5 in the Washington Open’s first round in his fourth match following hip surgery in January. Murray, 31, converted his seventh match point after more than two-and-a-half hours on court against the American.
