Borno LG polls, BOSIEC assures parties, candidates of free, fair, elections

The Borno State Independent Electoral Commission (BOSUEC) has assured all political parties and candidates of free, fair, transparent and credible local government elections in the state.

Briefing journalists at the headquarters of the BOSIEC, Maiduguri, the Chairman of the commission, Alhaji Abdu Usman, said : “I wish to reaffirm the  position of the commission to conduct hitch- free, credible, transparent and fair elections “.

“I have the singular honour and rare privilege to address you on the state of preparedness of the BOSIEC towards the conduct of 2020 council elections in the state scheduled o take place on 13th June, 2020.”, Alhaji Usman added.

He said:  “The 1999 Constitution of he Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended has made provision for a system of local government administration as third tiers of government to be administered by a democratically elected councils, accordingly, this is the main reason why state electoral commission were created in all the 36 states of the Federation “.

He said the election would be conducted in the 27  local government areas, 312 wards, 3,933 voting units and 5,072 voting points across the state, stressing that card readers are not going to be used in the June 13 council elections in the state.

Alhaji Usman said:  “I wish to inform you that since inception in 2002, BOSIEC conducted elections in 2004 and 2008 which were adjudged as free, fair and credible by both domestic and international observers. Even though there has been several proposal made to the state Government for elections to be conducted at the local government councils but it was not possible due to the prolong insurgency that engulfed the state since 2009.”

He assured that the military and other security agencies are working hard to ensure that elections are held in all local government areas, adding that in case of any security issues, the election will hold in the Internally Displaced  Person (IDPs) as it is in line with the provision of the law.
