Bauchi Assembly: Commotion as two Speakers emerge….Minority PDP members sidetrack APC legislators

In the early hours of Thursday, the Bauchi State House of Assembly   had a dramatic session when 11 members out of 31-member Assembly elected Suleiman Abubakar  (Dangaldiman Ningi ), of the All Progressive Congress,  APC, as a new speaker.

At about 6am, the members began their session and sidetracked 20 other members of the opposition APC, who constitute the majority.

According to the House and Standing Order, the House needed 11 members to form a quorum and take a decision on any matter.

The 11 members elected Suleiman of the APC from Ningi constituency as the new speaker before the arrival of the rest of his 20 APC colleagues.

At about 7:57, the newly elected Speaker Abubakar Suleiman adjourned sitting till further notice at the Chamber.

Those who elected the new speaker included the nine members of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and one member of New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP.

The election of the Speaker caused commotion in the chamber, forcing security agents to use teargas to disperse the legislators.

The early morning sitting was conducted under full security cover by men of the Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and State Security Services (SSS).

In the same vein, the 19 aggrieved members of the Assembly had also elected the former Speaker, Kawuwa Shehu Damina, as their Speaker after the adjourned sitting of the House by the newly- elected Speaker .
