PHIL OKOSE, Onitsha

Irked by two auto crashes that occurred in Onitsha and Umuchu, Anambra State, in which scores of lives and property estimated at millions of naira were lost, the state Chairman of Civil Liberties Organization, CLO, Comrade Vincent Ezekwueme, has demanded for the immediate nationwide verification of road worthiness of articulated trucks with a view to stopping incessant break failure that has caused loss of scores of lives.

Commiserating with the families of the deceased, the CLO boss stated that such accidents occurred due to negligence and lack of maintenance culture.

He disclosed further that he had urged Bishop Ephraim Ikeakor and other men of God to organise a week-long prayer session and fasting for the repose of the souls of the departed.

He recalled the memo he sent to Governor Willie Obiano on the poor state of the Ibughubu Umuchu road in 2014, 2015 and 2017 in which the governor thanked him and awarded the contract for the construction of the road adding that they should expedite action on the road and the governor should direct the Commissioner for Works to probe poor channeling of flood on the road and alleged illegal collection of #50,000 to #80,000 for culverts construction when it was part of the contract awarded.

“I appeal to the governor to provide speed breaker and street lights to the road and fulfill his promise to upgrade the Umuchu General hospital to Centre for Maternal Health Insurance Scheme including the Ugwuakpu Health post to General hospital”.

In his contribution, the spokesman of the National Coalition for Justice and Equity, Movement for Election of Nigeria President of Igbo Extraction and let Justice Prevail, Comrade Hyginus Udensi, stressed the need for FRSC to be up and doing adding that, “these days they are more money conscious than performing their duty.

Those who sell wares along the major roads should also clear from the roads especially at the notorious Upper Iweka axis”.
