Abia, Imo govs strategise on checking kidnappings, violent crimes


Governors of Abia and Imo states, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu and Owelle Rochas Okorocha have resolved to join forces to fight kidnappings and violent crimes in the two states.
Rising from a joint security meeting involving service chiefs and chairmen of traditional Rulers council of the two states at the Government House, Umuahia,the governors pledged to fashion out strategy to deal with the problems.
They condemned the spate of kidnappings and violent crimes in the zone especially the assassination of five Fulani men in a boundary between Abia and Imo state, ruling out any ethnic or religious motives to the attack.
According to them, the assassination of the five Fulani and two Igbo men found in a shallow grave in the bush was part of the kidnappings and violent crimes bedeviling the South East area and which the state governments have been grappling with.
They said the meeting is meant to address issues of common interests to the two states especially adding that it was meant to make the states a safe haven for investment and business.
Addressing the press after the meeting , Abia state Governor Dr Okezie Ikpeazu said,  “My brother Governor Okorocha  has come for us to fashion out strategy to battle issues of common interests between the two states ,especially security issues.
“It is our responsibility to protect all citizens , not only Abians but all Nigerians  and all members of the world community that are residing in both Imo and Abia states”
The Governors who said they intend to re-strategize their security apparatus with a view to dealing with criminal elements in the two states assured that the bush where the men were assassinated as well as other hideouts will be rid of criminals, stressing that it is their responsibility to protect lives and property of their people as well as those of others residing in their states.
According to them, those involved in the heinous crime have been arrested and would  pay the prize and disclosed that plans were  underway by the two states to purchase some crime fighting equipment.
They promised to sustain the meeting and to extend it to neighbouring states.
