No fewer than 500 youths of Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area, Anambra state, have renounced cultism and pledged to be of good behaviour even as the community continued her celebration of the week-long annual Nwafor festival.
The repentant cultists had in the early morning of the fateful day, dressed in white jersey and converged at the Ogidi town hall from where they marched through the major roads in a peaceful procession, some others on convoy of over 2o vehicles and motorcycles, displaying placards some of which read, “say no to cultism, no to hard drugs, no to thuggery, and armed robbery”
According to the leader of the repentant youths, Ifeatu Okeke, “we commend Dr.Obiorah Okonkwo Dikeorah, for the interest he has to better the welfare of the youths in Ogidi which prompted him to earmark #10millon as Endowment fund which the youths will come foward to have from him as empowerment strategy instead of roaming the streets and indulging in cultism”.
“From today upwards any youth caught involved in cultism will be arrested and handed over to the security operatives. Do not say you have nothing doing and that is why you engage yourself into it, be part of the beneficiaries of the fund by coming to register and be empowered with money from Dikeorah’s kind gesture because you will not be spared when caught” he warned.
Contributing, the chairman of Board of Trustees,( BOT ) of the Endowment fund, Chief Sam Mendu Onwa, stated that, “from cultism you turn to drug addict, armed robber, assassin among others and that is the reason why we want to save your lives through the benevolence of our son, Dikeorah, who wants you to have something doing so that you say bye to cultism and become self reliant”
Contributing, the traditional ruler of Ogidi, HRM Igwe Alex Onyido affirmed that with this renouncement of cultism in Ogidi the youths would have a change of heart and commended Dr. Dikeorah for assisting the youths.
On why the renouncement coincided with the period of the festival he said, “it is a period of mass return of any Ogidi man and we celebrate it more than any other festivity. So, most of the youths if not all will be present”.
Earlier, a member of the BOT, Barr. Obum O. Osakwe, who was flanked by the Legal Adviser to the Youths, Barr, Pat Agbata, hinted that, “this is the very first time the youths will come out and say no to cultism”
“I believe God that one of them may in the nest eight years be Governor of the state because it is the time of the youths to be uplifted and say no to cultism”
Also speaking, Barr. Agbata commended Dr. Dikeorah for coming to the rescue of the youths and urged them to see the Endowment fund as opportunity to change to a new leaf and be self reliant.
