PHIL OKOSE, Onitsha

The Delta State Police Command has warned that it would deal ruthlessly with the vigilante groups and other private security guards in the state if they did not steer clear of election matters.

Sounding the note of warning in a press statement signed by the state Acting Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr. Chuks Orisewezie, (ASP) in Onitsha, the command Acting PPRO expressed dismay with the way and manner majority of the volunteer organizations are meddling into the election and security affairs.

Buttressing his point, the Acting PPRO said that, “reference point are the three (3) suspects viz David Ukiri ‘ , Alfred Joseph ‘m’ and Uvwiejibobor Akpevwe ‘m’ who were arrested by the police stationed to guard sensitive election materials at the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, in Asaba, state capital.

On arrest of the three who were armed, they claimed to be vigilante operatives sent by their chairman to help escort election materials”

He reiterated that “responsibility of providing security during this general election rests on the police in collaboration with the military, Civil Defence, Federal Road Safety Corps, Immigration, Department of Security Services, DSS, among others”.

“the police therefore warn all stakeholders who have or intend to employ the services of private security agents, volunteers, guards, among others for election matters to desist from doing so, any such armed private personnel in whatever form or disguise will be dealt with appropriately” he warned.
