The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Borno has unanimously adopted indirect primaries in the state in all party primaries, except presidential primary at a critical stakeholders meeting of the party held at the APC state Secretariat, Maiduguri.
It was said that former Governor Ali Modu Sheriff faction of APC was holding direct primaries in the state as against indirect and they were said to be registering their supporters online, which the state executive of the party said was illegal.
While addressing the stakeholders meeting, the state Chairman of the party, Hon. Ali Bukar Dalori, said he called the stakeholders meeting to adopt mode of primaries to adopt in the state.
“Recently, we held the 6th NEC meeting of our party in Abuja where we adopted direct primary for Presidential primary and agreed that states should either adopt consensus, direct or indirect primaries, as according to the party’s constitution”, the chairman added.
He said: “The state executive has decided to adopt indirect primaries in all elective position primaries, except that of president, we call the stakeholders meeting to sort for your opinion and endorsement “.
Hon Dalori further said: “We are adopting the indirect primaries because, as I am speaking to you, we don’t have authentic register of members of the party in the state Secretariat or national Secretariat, because of insecurity facing the stare.
Speaking on the occasion, Governor Kashim Shettima thanked the stakeholders for unanimously adopting the indirect primaries in the state.
Governor Shettia, who was represented by his Deputy, Alhaji Udman Mamman Durkea prayed for the successful and peaceful primaries in the state.Moving the motion for the adoption of indirect primaries, the former Senate, Leader Senator, Mohammed Ali Ndume said according to the Article 20(3) of the party, the party is free to adopt either Consensus, direct or indirect primaries”
” Following the decision of the national headquarters of the party that states are free to adopt any of the options and the deliberations we had here, I so move for the adaption of indirect primaries in the state,” Ndume said.
While seconding, the motion, the member representing, Damboa,, Chibok, Gwoza Federal Conatuency, Hon, Asabe Vilita Bashir said ” following themotion moved by senator Ndume for the adoption of indirect primaries I so second.”
Earlier speaking on behalf of Senators, Senator, Abubakar Kyari said: ” On behalf of the three senators, we unanimously agreed to go with the state executive in the adoption of indirect primaries in the state because of our particular insecurity and Aldo because we still have our people in the IDP camps in Cameroon and Niger republic who will be disenfranchised if direct primaries is adopted.”
Also speaking on behalf of the members of House of representative, the chairman Borno members of House of Representative Caucus, Hon. Mohammed Tahit Monguno, said the adoption of indirect post in the state was in line with the party’s constitution.
